Hello! I’m Michael.

I’m Michael Tolar — a mechanical engineer and industrial designer based near Dallas, TX. I specialize in designing functional, visually refined products, with expertise in SolidWorks (CSWP), 3D modeling for 5/6-axis machining, FEA, and user-focused mechanical systems.

Since 2018, I’ve led end-to-end product development across industries, from material handling to professional cinema gear. My work includes accessories for RED, Sony, ARRI, Canon, and Fujifilm cameras — from SDI splitters to modular cages and power solutions. I also guide industrial design language, mentor teammates, and manage our SolidWorks PDM system.

Experience

Product Design Engineer
Wooden Camera; Irvine, CA (Remote)

  • Modeling: I generate parts for 5 and 6-axis machining, focusing

on aesthetics / ergonomics and the development of thoughtful

and useful mechanisms while maintaining lightweight designs

Drafting: I produce 2D shop drawings for machining and assembly

    (tolerances, BOMs, etc.)

    • Prototyping: I collaborate with suppliers to support prototype

    fabrication and design iteration

    • Electrical Support: I work with electrical engineering to develop

enclosures, mounting solutions and 3D assemblies for electronic

components such as PCBs and wire routes

    • Industrial Design: Responsible for the physical / mechanical

design language for the brand. I develop and enforce companywide

product design ID and guide the team in adhering and

    maintaining these standards

    • PDM Administration: Administer and optimize team’s SolidWorks

    PDM Vault

    • Strategy / Vision: I frequently suggest and implement process

    improvements focused on productivity

    optimization and team morale

    • Notable projects:

Sony FX3 accessory system – a self-assigned project that grossed

    $300K+ in sales

Fujinon DUVO cage system – large form factor and unique

challenge related to fitment and mechanisms

RED V-RAPTOR accessories – worked directly with the lead

designer at RED to develop their accessories sold on red.com

Project Engineer - 2018-2020
Concept Industrial Systems; Ruston, LA (In Office)

  • Use Solidworks to design machines for material handling lines, such as drywall products and other flat panel materials in the construction industry

  • Utilize Solidworks add-ins such as Solidworks Simulation and Solidworks Motion to aid in design

  • Size cylinders and gearboxes for optimum machine performance

  • Determine chain and sprocket, belt and pulley specifications, and implementation of 3D models into designs

  • Implementation of BOMs, weld callouts, and dimensions with tolerances

  • Combine overall machine designs into large assemblies for use in general arrangement drawings

  • Use Mathcad, Excel and other tools to analyze designs where needed

More about me

Outside of my design work, my life is full of entrepreneurial endeavors. I run a wedding photography and videography business (Last Light Photography & Videography) on the weekends, and I design and sell 3D printed products on my Etsy and Amazon stores. Outside of that, I love to travel with my wife, and I’m a huge movie lover.
